Journalist killed in Kashmir

Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans frontières) condemned the murder on 31 January of Parvaz Mohammed Sultan, owner and editor of the local news agency News and Feature Alliance (NAFA), in the summer capital, Srinagar. It called on the state's chief minister and the federal home affairs minister to quickly arrest and try those responsible. Sultan, 35, was shot dead at his home-cum-office in the city's Press Enclave (where most media are based) by two gunmen suspected by the police of being armed separatists. He was wounded in the neck and died shortly afterwards. As well as running NAFA, he was local correspondent for the Indian newspaper Quami Awaaz. Since the start of separatist violence in 1989, a dozen journalists have been killed in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
