Editor of three weekly papers killed in grenade attack

Reporters Without Borders called on the authorities in northern Iraq to find and punish those responsible for a grenade attack today that killed journalist Sahar Saad Eddin Nuami, editor of three Kirkuk weekly papers. Nuami, who edited Al-Mizan, Al-Khaima and Al-Hayat al-Gadida and was close to a moderate pan-Arab political group, was killed instantly by a grenade thrown at his car by unknown attackers in the city. Clashes are common between the city's three main ethnic communities, the Turkmens, Kurds and Arabs, and several prominent figures have been murdered recently. Iraq is still one of the world's most dangerous places for journalists. Since fighting started there in March last year, at least 33 journalists and media assistants have been killed, 19 of them this year, including 15 Iraqis. Nuami is the first to be killed in Kirkuk.
