Camille Grenier Appointed Executive Director of the Forum on Information and Democracy
The Board of Directors of the Forum on Information and Democracy announces the appointment of Camille Grenier as Executive Director. This new position is a natural progression given his constant engagement within the organization, which he helped establish in 2019 at Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
RSF initiated the creation of the Forum on Information and Democracy, officially inaugurated in November 2019, to implement the principles of the Partnership for Information and Democracy, endorsed by 52 states. To this end, the Forum produces public policy recommendations on, for example, the fight against disinformation, the sustainability of journalism, the pluralism of algorithms and artificial intelligence.
In a meeting on April 18, 2024, the Board of Directors of the Forum on Information and Democracy, chaired by Christophe Deloire, Secretary General of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), appointed Mr. Camille Grenier as the organization's Executive Director.
"With this decision, the Board of Directors acknowledges Camille’s unwavering dedication to the Forum on Information and Democracy. We are pleased to entrust him with the implementation of our strategic plan and the development of the organization. At a crucial time for the implementation of democratic safeguards in the information and communication space, we know we can count on his energy and passion, as well as the commitment of the entire Forum team.
In February 2019, Camille joined RSF to contribute to the development of the International Initiative on Information and Democracy launched a few months earlier. Based on the principles established by the Commission on Information and Democracy, convened by RSF and chaired by Christophe Deloire and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi, he contributed to the negotiations of the Partnership for Information and Democracy, which has since then been endorsed by 52 states.
To implement the principles of this Partnership, RSF initiated the creation of the Forum on Information and Democracy, which was officially inaugurated in November 2019. Camille became the organization’s first employee in July 2020. He significantly contributed to the development of the organization, which now has a budget of over 700,000 euros, a permanent team of six people, and numerous partners worldwide.
Under his supervision, the Forum has published 5 public policy reports, notably on the fight against disinformation, the sustainability of journalism, accountability regimes online and, more recently, on the impact of AI on the information space, bringing together hundreds of concrete recommendations addressed to the States of the Partnership for Information and Democracy.
"I am honored by this appointment and accept my responsibilities with humility and conviction. The Forum has experienced strong growth in its early years, and I am committed to continuing this momentum. Amid the upheavals of artificial intelligence (AI), this record election year, and a busy multilateral agenda, the Forum can play a leading role in promoting a democratic vision against authoritarian temptations and simplistic solutions that threaten freedom of opinion and expression.
Camille Grenier took office on May 13, 2024, and can count on the support of the Board of Directors, particularly that of RSF, which continues to support and promote this initiative that bridges civil society and democratic states.
