Mission and main deliverables

The Beirut Press Freedom Centre is an initiative led by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) that started in March 2024. In collaboration with key local stakeholders, including the Samir Kassir Foundation and Maharat, the Centre in Beirut is contributing to support journalism in the region. The Centre aims to be a place of reception, discussion and work, training, loans of protective equipment and referencing.

Within the last year, the Centre was set into place and developed its core activities. Next steps for development for 2025 include upscaling the activities, strengthening the network around the Centre and giving more visibility to the Centre. 

The communication and partnership officer will have the tasks of, in particular:

1) Communication strategy and implementation

  • Propose a communication strategy for the Centre (objectives, results, timeline…) in collaboration with the relevant RSF internal actors
  • Implement the communication strategy accordingly, and update it as necessary, including : 

-Engage with the journalist networks in the region to promote RSF’s activities and with the Centre’s beneficiaries

-Create the necessary communication materials to promote the Centre’s activities 

-Put forward new ideas based on the evolution of the regional context 

2) Partnership development 

  • Map out key actors in the journalism field to identify new synergies and opportunities for activity development on an ongoing basis 
  • Promote the Centre’s activities amongst the network of partners
  • Identify the initiatives and the coordination platforms where RSF should be integrated

3) Development of the Centre’s visibility

  • Boost the Centre’s visibility by assessing the possibilities and organising events to gather journalists (Q&A, round-tables…)

4) Internal communication and coordination 

  • Coordination with the Beirut-based team:

-Coordinate with the Centre’s coordinator to get the activities’ data and create regular data visualisation

-Coordinate with the correspondent regarding the promotion of activities and engaging with the journalist networks

  • Ensure the link with RSF Paris, and in particular:

-Press release ideas and redaction on the Centre’s activities 

-Prepare a monthly short article for internal communication on the Centre’s updates

Prerequisites

  • Fluency in Arabic and English/French. All three languages would be ideal, Arabic is compulsory.
  • Detailed knowledge of the Lebanese context, as well as the journalistic environment
  • Journalists network that can be mobilised, at least in Lebanon
  • Experience in communication (creation of communication content, community management)
  • Experience in organising events is a plus 

Specifics

This consultancy is estimated for 2 half-days a week, for a starting date as soon as possible. 

The service provider must be in compliance with local government regulations and be able to issue invoices that comply with local legislation.

The interviews will take place online with the Projects officer in Paris coordinating the Centre.
